Lazy days in Crete

Back in Calgary we hear over 30cm of snow fell overnight a few days ago. Heŕe in Crete, temperatures are in the mid to high 20s, still perfect for beach and pool time.

Since Wednesday, we have been enjoying luxury camping in Agia Galini, at "Camping No Problem". We had read its excellent reviews prior to arriving here, and we're going to find it hard to leave! A fantastic taverna serving giant portions of local cuisine at reasonable prices, perfectly clean bathrooms and kitchen, and a great pool, set just a short walk from the heart of this popular village and harbour.

The 31km ride to get here from our last stop, Matala, was a bit of a grunt. However, any benefit we may have gained from that bit of exercise has been quickly cancelled out by our sedentary last two days in this little oasis!

There are quite a few other campers here. There is one other couple in a tent, lots of Germans in their campervans, and a few long-term English residents in caravans. We spoke to a very friendly German couple today who are travelling all round the island in their van. I always ask folks where their favourite spot has been on the island, and the answer is usually somewhere in western Crete. So we still have that to look forward to when David and Rosita arrive from Sligo later in the month.

Tomorrow we plan to be back on the bikes again, and there's nowhere to go except up! We're surrounded by mountains here with no easy route along the coast.

Route planned for tomorrow has 500m net elevation gain. I expect a tough day.

  1. You’re both so lucky. Antiparos seems like a dim and distant memory. No snow in Dublin, just a carpet of leaves. Enjoy your last three weeks and keep writing regular blogs!

  2. We know we're lucky Geraldine. I'm sure you'd love to be back on that beach in Antiparos. Thanks for the blogging encouragement!

  3. I'm sure that when you got the picture of your poor car in Calgary, you must have congratulated yourself for the excellent planning of your trip!
Most of your adventures sound great.
