More of Provence - and I found my lavender!

Explorations of Provence have continued over the last few days. Temperatures are well into the 30s, but with the air-conditioned car, it hasn't been a problem. Nights cool off enough to be able to sleep comfortably in the tent, without the fly.

Just some of the highlights have been the drive along the other side of the Gorge du Verdon, a short kayak trip in the gorge, the towns of Moustiers-Saint-Marie, Roussillon with its ochre, the lavender and sunflowers on the plateau of Valensole, the medieval town of Gordes, and many of the lovely country roads through farmland and other little villages with streets so narrow Frank's driving skills have been challenged!

Gorge du Verdon

Photos never do justice to the grandeur of gorges like this

Joined the throngs for a paddle a little way up the gorge
Moustiers-Saint-Marie, a beautiful little town

Try to imagine the loud buzzing of bees,  not to mention the fragrance
It's still quite early for sunflowers, but we found one field in bloom

Everyone goes crazy when they see lavender- cars are parked all
along the roadsides, folks  running from side to side to get photos.
The Asians are the most interesting to watch as they do their
million poses, but they're not alone. So this sign struck me as interesting.
However, it wasn't till I got up close to it that I saw it had been altered.
And someone has scrawled "Racist" on it, and perhaps it is.
Let it not be said that I didn't make full use of those wedge sandals!!
Really good paella served from a food truck at our campground

He saved us having to cook that night
The town of Roussillon is known for it's ochre production,
and the houses are all painted its different hues
Gordes is a medieval town
Provence has not disappointed. We've loved it. Would have been nice to cycle parts of it, but we're not missing riding in 35 degrees. But now we are ready for a change of scenery for the last leg of the trip before we make our way to Lyon. And good news for us - we have secured two cardboard bicycle boxes from bike shops in the town of Manosque this morning, so that's an important detail taken care of. Lots of options now for the next four days - let's see where we end up!

Tonight's tranquil campsite in Sault.
Angela, this is the one you told us about, love it here.

  1. It is all very beautiful Daphne! I love the blooming fields. I'm glad your sandals found their way out of the luggage to see the light of day!
I still remember the little town of
Moustiers-Saint-Marie, it was gorgeous. When we saw it, there was mist rising from the waterfalls underneath the bridge in the center of the town, very picturesque.
