Not all tour days are perfect

Yesterday (day 5) was a hard day, mostly because of the heat. By noon it was over 30C. By the time we reached the spectacularly situated town of Rothenberg high above the Tauber River at 1pm, we were dragging our feet. A tasty Mexican lunch within the town walls was a respite from the heat.

However, it was tough to get motivated after that as the next section had hills and was along some roads rather than pathways. So we had the bright idea of using public transport for a bit! And amazingly enough with Google maps's help, we found a bus that was going to a suitable town along the route for which you could purchase bike tickets. Google confused me as it directed us to the Bahnhof (train station), so I assumed we would be taking a train. But no, it turned out to be a bus that left from the train station. Anyway, after a bit of head-scratching, we got us and the bikes on the bus and we therefore managed to skip 20km of not very inspiring riding.

How we felt about today's ride

Scenery along the morning section of the ride was great

We dilly-dalied over good coffee and pastries until 5pm by which time a few clouds had moved in and it had cooled considerably. We then rode another 30 something km to Dinkelsbuhl, another one of those charming Bavarian postcard towns, where we felt no guilt at all in checking into a hotel for the night. By then it was 8pm.

After showers, we headed out to eat expecting to have lots of choices, only to find out that only one restaurant in town kept their kitchen open past 9.30pm. Dinkelsbuhl folks don't stay up late apparently. We had a good dinner but both of us had trouble keeping our eyes open by the time we finished at 11pm.

  1. Well, of course, hills are for the young, we do it here also. We'll go to the mountains by bus or train and then have 50 or 60 km of beautiful downhill. Jirka Vor

  2. Very resourceful way to avoid the road section! The towns looking so charming and cute.
