Back on the trail again - Leaving the Hook of Holland

Near Schoonhoven, Netherlands Sat May 14th

We're back on the road again! But I'm using a “loaner” bike from the bike shop. Since the part still had not arrived by Thursday afternoon, we, together with our friends Bob and Jose, came up with the best plan B. We'd already been stuck for 5 days and were anxious  to get going. So the plan was that once my bike is fixed, we’ll hop back on the train to do the exchange. Meanwhile Bob is staying in touch with the bike shop.

Route planning with Bob at their home

However, this morning we got some good news via Bob that the bike is fixed!! And Bob and Jose are going to drive the bike to us tomorrow. Meanwhile we can continue riding, lucky us.

We can't say enough about the kindness of these people that we were fortunate enough to encounter on the bike trail. They've  gone above and beyond in every way to get us back on the road and take care of us in the meantime. We'll be forever grateful.

Right now we are in a lovely little campground along the North side of the section of river called the Lek. It's a farm, so we're surrounded by horses, donkeys, goats, cattle and sheep and all their sounds. And so peaceful. We rode 70km yesterday, and other than a busy section of Rotterdam which was a bit tricky to find a route through, it's been lovely cycling, all on cycle paths of course.

We got into camp about 8pm and cooked up a couple of easy pre-made pasta dishes from the nearby Spar.

One of two ferry crossings across the river we did yesterday

Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring 19 18th century windmills used to regulate water and prevent flooding in the low-lying land in the area. We rode right past this site.

Dinner at camp last night

This morning - sunny and warm, sound of the cuckoo and lots of farm animals!

  1. We are very happy that you are on the road again! The weather looks fantastic...what a ride!
And as we say...doesn't matter where you travel...the most important thing is the people you meet on the way. Vivat Bob and Jose!

  2. Today, Niky slept with her children in the garden in a tent. In the morning, she said she felt like she was after a party. I tried to get into the tent, it was hard, but it was even worse to get out. So much admiration for you, and even to ride a bike for more than two months.

    1. Frank can relate to getting in and out of the tent! But I must say our new tent with a wide exit on both sides makes getting in and out much easier. And a couple of comfy air mattresses help a lot
